Recently, I had the honor of being a guest on Mark Ohrenberger’s fantastic Graphic Novel Apostle Podcast, where Mark shares great stories from comics and graphic novels with friends who don’t usually read comics. Will any become Graphic Novel Disciples? We’ll see!
We talked about my 240-page, hand-painted graphic nonfiction book, What Follows Is True: Crescent Hotel, which blends striking painted imagery with dynamic illustration to uncover the haunting history of the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas—particularly its darkest chapter as the Baker Hospital. The book weaves together personal narrative and historical research, drawing from oral histories, newspaper archives, and Norman Baker’s own writings to explore this chilling era and its lingering echoes.
We also discussed my forthcoming What Follows Is True graphic nonfiction project, produced in collaboration with Dr. Paige Ford and the Arkansas Archeological Survey. This upcoming book will serve as an educational resource highlighting the folklore, history, science, and archaeological significance of the ancient Plum Bayou Mounds in Scott, Arkansas.
Many thanks to Mark Ohrenberger for having me on the podcast!
