Owl Drawing

This is a little drawing I did of an owl for our three-year-old daughter Sadie. We read about animals a lot and learned that these incredible birds have tube-shaped eyes that allow them to have binocular-like vision for focusing on prey. They can rotate their necks an impressive 270 degrees. A group of owls is called a parliament which is derived from the C.S. Lewis book the “Chronicles of Narnia”.

CRYSTAL SKULLS

Here is another crystal skull piece I drew and painted inspired by the in the “Crystals In Art” exhibit at Crystal Bridges Museum of Art.  Crystals in Art: Ancient to Today explores the complex and varied connections between crystal and art throughout the world.

Crystal Skulls have always been shrouded in mystery and controversy. They are generally thought to be of pre-Columbian, Aztec or Mayan origin. However, it appears none of the skulls in museum collections come from documented excavations and have been created using tools developed in the 19th century.

Nike relief sculpture

Here is a small painting I did from a trip to Athens, Greece from an ancient marble, relief sculpture of the goddess Nike adjusting her sandal from an Ionic frieze on the temple of Athena Nike which featured beautiful sculptural decoration. In Greek mythology Nike is portrayed as a symbol of victory, strength, and speed. I like that it is a goddess portrayed in a simple, everyday gesture that is both charming and elegant. This beautiful relief is on display in the Acropolis Museum in Athens.
