WITHIN THE REALM PODCAST INTERVIEW

Check out my talk with Steve Garrett on "Within The Realm" podcast HERE. "There are plenty of ghost stories in the Ozarks’ but Sean Fitzgibbon’s graphic novel, a history really, provides the story of what is said to be the most haunted place in these hills. It’s a tale of a creepy old hotel perched at the highest point in town, a colorful charlatan claiming to have a cure for cancer and mysteries that linger to this day. Find more about Sean’s excellent book What Follows Is True: Crescent Hotel.

This is an image from my book that depicts Norman Baker at his KTNT radio station in the 1920’s. Baker was always in litigation with the Federal Communications Commission for exceeding the radios' power output (measured in watts) beyond FCC regulations. The radio was a platform for his cancer cure proclamations as well as his bitter attacks on individuals, companies and associations.

GHOST INSIGHT PODCAST

Recently I was a guest on Jim Harold’s “Ghost Insight” podcast discussing the Crescent Hotel (what many call the most haunted hotel in the US) and my new graphic nonfiction “What Follows Is True: Crescent Hotel”. You can check out the podcast HERE. Thanks Jim!

PROCESS

Just thought I'd share a bit of my drawing and painting process. When creating my stories I tend to draw quite a bit of period vehicles. I often use model cars for reference. Norman Baker drove a custom painted purple Cord 812 while at in Eureka Springs during the late 1930's. I found a model 1937 Cord automobile that served as reference. The Cord 810 and 812 was the first American-designed and built front wheel drive car with independent front suspension.

I often tape off the edges of my watercolor paper using painters tape so I can keep the edges clean. I start with a rough draft and then move to tight pencils and spot black areas then build up with watercolor values and then color. Some of these original pages were recently on display at Community Creative Center’s McCoy Gallery in Fayetteville, AR and will be exhibited at the Muscatine Art Center in Muscatine, IA in September and October.
