SMALL WORKS ON PAPER 2025 EXHIBITION MOVES TO PINE BLUFF

The ARTx3 Campus will host a free public reception for the 38th annual Small Works on Paper exhibition from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas.

The traveling exhibition, organized and sponsored by the Arkansas Arts Council, is on view from Friday, June 6, through Saturday, June 28, in ASC’s Ben J. Altheimer Gallery.

Small Works on Paper showcases two-dimensional artwork no larger than 18-by-24 inches, and spotlights members of the Arkansas Artist Registry. The exhibition will travel to nine venues throughout the state in this yearlong show. This year's exhibition features 40 works by 35 artists.

This year’s exhibition features my 7x7 watercolor piece, Provenance. This work explores questions of chronology, ownership, custody, and the location of historical objects, as well as the challenges of determining their provenance and authenticity. It examines how objects considered to be art are often subject to evolving interpretations over time.

June 6, - June 28 • The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas • 701 S. Main Street • Pine Bluff, AR 71601

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

As a graphic nonfiction author, artist, and art educator, I read a lot, and I wanted to share a few nonfiction, art history related books that have inspired me lately.

The Lost Painting by Jonathan Harr
A gripping true story about the search for a lost Caravaggio masterpiece.

The Judgment of Paris by Ross King
This dual biography contrasts academic painter Ernest Meissonier with the radical Édouard Manet during the 1860s, a decade that gave rise to Impressionism.

The Vanishing Velázquez by Laura Cumming
The fascinating tale of John Snare, a 19th-century bookseller who staked everything on a mysterious portrait he believed to be a lost Velázquez.

Norman Baker's Authoritarian Techniques

This hand drawn and painted panel is from my graphic nonfiction book "What Follows Is True: Crescent Hotel". Norman Baker framed institutions as corrupt enemies and exploited the desperate, offering false hope for profit. His use of charisma, divisive rhetoric, media manipulation, and disinformation mirrors the tactics of modern authoritarians, a stark reminder of how easily truth can be distorted to exploit the vulnerable for personal gain.
