WHAT CAN AN ANCIENT PIECE OF POTTERY TELL US?
Even an ordinary piece of ancient pottery can reveal fascinating clues about the people who made and used it. A recent discovery at Plum Bayou Mounds, a fragment of a Coles Creek Incised bowl, contains evidence of how it was constructed, decorated, and possibly used near a fire more than 1,000 years ago. By examining details preserved in the clay, archaeologists can begin to reconstruct the daily lives and activities of the people who lived at this remarkable ceremonial site. STORIES TO DRAW FROM
I’m starting a new little newsletter segment called “Stories to Draw From”. In each installment, I’ll explore places, objects, and other historical oddities that catch my interest, along with research materials I come across along the way, such as old photographs, newspaper articles, maps, historical documents, and even my own drawings and paintings.
Some of these discoveries may simply be interesting rabbit holes, while others might eventually become the subject of a future installment of What Follows Is True! Think of it as a behind the scenes look at the kinds of stories, images, and bits of history that get my imagination going and might someday find their way onto the page.

WHAT FOLLOWS IS TRUE…
What Follows Is True: Crescent Hotel is actually the beginning of a larger graphic nonfiction series exploring the visual history of strange, mysterious, and unusual places. For each installment, I’ll work with experts in their respective fields to peel back the layers of history, separating the legends from the facts and uncovering the true stories behind the lore, which are often stranger and more fascinating than the legends themselves. We’ll also look at how these places connect to the world we live in today.
In the meantime, I’ll be exploring other unusual places and stories that may eventually find their way into a future installment of What Follows Is True. There are plenty of strange places out there, and I’m just getting started.
NWA BOOK FEST SEPTEMBER 26
Join us for the fourth annual NWA Book Fest takes place on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I'll be selling and signing copies of my Kirkus starred, graphic nonfiction book What Follows Is True; Crescent Hotel. This free community event features a vibrant bookish market with regional vendors, live panel discussions, and writing workshops, including an appearance by featured author Ayana Gray. The day wraps up with an Open Mic Night from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, making it a perfect weekend destination for local book lovers and writers. I hope to see you there!
