STORIES TO DRAW FROM 006

What Follows Is True...The Tomb of Marie Laveau / St Louis Cemetery No. 1

This is a watercolor I painted of Marie Laveau after my most recent visit to New Orleans. Laveau is traditionally believed to be buried in the Laveau-Glapion family tomb at New Orleans’ historic St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Born around 1801, she became New Orleans’ most famous Voodoo queen, a mysterious figure surrounded by whispers of prophecy, healing, and dark rituals. She was a respected herbalist and community leader who helped prisoners and the sick. Legend claims she commanded spirits and could predict the future. After her death in 1881, stories of her supernatural powers only grew, and some still leave offerings at her supposed tomb, asking the Voodoo Queen for favors from beyond the grave.
