This is a detail (watercolor) from my upcoming, 200-page graphic nonfiction What Follows Is True: Crescent Hotel. The Baker Institute in Muscatine, Iowa (a former skating rink) shut its doors in 1938 and patients were transferred to the Baker Hospital (Crescent Hotel) in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

This is a collaged sketchbook page I watercolored on and drew over with colored pencils. I rendered this while on a visit to an eerie, abandoned, mannequin refurbishing warehouse. It was such a beautifully surreal encounter with these mannequins, relics from a bygone era, now seemingly weary of the weight of time.
