Sketchbook: Florence, Italy

This is a little pen and ink drawing from my sketchbook I drew in Florence, Italy. Florence is the capital of the Tuscany region and birthplace of the Renaissance. This beautiful city is noted for its art, architecture and monuments.

CERES

This is a detail from a piece of mine called “Ceres”. Ceres is the Greek goddess of agriculture and fertility. I believe I saw this sculpture just outside the capital building in Jefferson City, MO quite a while back. I remember going there to check out their NC Wyeth mural and was also captivated by this sculpture. I love drawing architectural and sculptural forms so this was perfect.

EUREKA SPRINGS

Eureka Springs, Arkansas is the primary location of my upcoming graphic nonfiction about the strange history of the Crescent Hotel. This book explore this very unique town in both the past and present. This picturesque, Victorian hamlet, with it’s elaborate, Queen Anne dwellings perched on limestone bluffs, steep elevations, serpentine roads that don’t intersect and a subterranean village buried beneath is deemed one of the nine most unusual towns in the US by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. It earns its reputation.
